The Tripura Legislative Assembly on Friday passed a congratulatory motion honouring state judoka Asmita Dey for her historic gold-medal triumph at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The motion was moved by Assembly Speaker Rampada Jamatia on the second day of the ongoing Assembly session. The House unanimously lauded Asmita for creating history by becoming the first Indian judoka to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal.

According to the motion, on July 31, 2026, Asmita defeated Canada’s Heidi Quach in the final of the women’s 48kg category through a dramatic Golden Score victory, bringing immense pride to Tripura and the country.

The Speaker highlighted Asmita’s inspiring journey from South Sonaichhari village under Belonia subdivision in South Tripura to the international sporting arena. Born on March 22, 2003, she is the youngest daughter of the late Arjun Dey and Munni Patari Dey.

The Assembly praised the young judoka for overcoming numerous challenges through hard work, perseverance, discipline, self-confidence and determination. Members noted that her achievement was not only a personal milestone but also a powerful source of inspiration for talented youngsters, particularly those from rural and remote areas.

The House expressed hope that Asmita’s success would encourage more young people in Tripura to take up sports and motivate future generations to pursue their dreams on national and international platforms.

The Assembly also noted that Asmita is currently undergoing intensive training under qualified coaches as she prepares for the Asian Games judo competition in Japan in September.

“Tripura Legislative Assembly extends its heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the Golden Girl Asmita Dey,” the motion stated.

The House also acknowledged the contributions and sacrifices of Asmita’s late father, mother, brother, coaches and all those who supported her throughout her journey.

The Assembly wished Asmita good health, a bright future and continued success in international competitions, expressing confidence that she would bring further glory to India and Tripura.
