Environment Minister Urges Police to Ensure Effective Use of Sound Level Meters to Curb Noise Pollution

In a move to strengthen noise pollution control and ensure stricter enforcement of environmental norms, the Tripura State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) has provided 35 modern sound level meters to the Tripura Police for scientific monitoring of noise levels across the state.

The equipment was handed over during a programme organised at Prajna Bhavan in Agartala on Monday, with the participation of the Department of Science, Technology and Environment, TSPCB and senior police officials.

Science, Technology and Environment Minister Animesh Debbarma, who attended the programme as the chief guest, formally handed over the devices to the police. On the occasion, he also virtually inaugurated the Dr C. V. Raman Planetarium at Science City in Agartala.

Addressing the gathering, Debbarma stressed the need for coordinated efforts to tackle noise pollution and safeguard public health. He urged police personnel to make proper and effective use of the newly provided instruments to identify and control excessive noise in residential neighbourhoods and other public places.

The minister emphasised that environmental protection requires effective implementation of existing regulations alongside greater awareness and administrative coordination.

The programme also highlighted the importance of technology-driven monitoring in ensuring compliance with prescribed noise standards. TSPCB Chairman Dr K. Shashikumar delivered a presentation on the legal provisions governing noise pollution, permissible decibel limits and the role of scientific measurement in enforcing environmental regulations.

Earlier, TSPCB Member Secretary Dr Bishu Karmakar welcomed the participants and underlined the importance of cooperation between the pollution control authorities and the police in addressing noise-related concerns.

Principal Secretary of the department Shantanu highlighted the growing role of modern technology in environmental management and protection.

Tripura Police IGP (Law and Order) Manchak Ippar assured that the police would utilise the equipment effectively to maintain public order and control noise pollution during festivals and throughout the year.

The distribution of the sound level meters is expected to strengthen the police's capacity to monitor noise levels and support the enforcement of environmental norms across Tripura.
