The political party Tipra Motha on Monday staged a protest against the proposed establishment of the 49th Battalion headquarters of the Border Security Force (BSF) in Sepahijala district.

The protest was led by MDC (Member of District Council) Umashankar Debbarma of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council. He began a sit-in demonstration near the entrance of the Sepahijala District Magistrate’s office, opposing the proposed construction of the BSF headquarters at Bishramganj Nagar Panchayat, particularly in the Barjala and Chikanchhara areas of Bishramganj.

Debbarma, accompanied by several Tipra Motha workers and supporters, alleged that the initiative to set up the BSF headquarters was being undertaken without consulting the local residents. He asserted that the party would not accept the move under any circumstances and declared that the protest would continue until a permanent solution is reached.

Following the demonstration, Additional Superintendent of Police Rajib Sutradhar of Sepahijala district and Officer-in-Charge Ajit Debbarma of Bishramganj Police Station reached the spot. They requested the MDC to shift the protest away from the main entrance of the District Magistrate’s office, citing legal restrictions that prohibit demonstrations within 100 meters of the office premises.

The situation remained tense for some time as discussions took place between the police and the protesters. However, the demonstrators continued their sit-in protest. It remains to be seen whether further discussions will take place between the administration and the protesters to resolve the issue.
