Tipra Motha Party MLA Ranjit Debbarma today has written a formal letter to Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, seeking detailed information regarding the recently formed Special Task Force (STF) in the state, particularly in the West Tripura district.

The letter, citing concerns raised through various government and media sources, questions the transparency and structural clarity of the STF initiative aimed at curbing infiltration in the state.

Debbarma pointed out that while the formation of the STF has been publicised, the official notification merely listed a few police officers’ names under the West Tripura unit without elaborating on the structure, composition, or functioning of the force.

Highlighting the growing public concern over the issue, he urged the Chief Minister to provide written clarification to ensure transparency and address the confusion surrounding the STF’s mandate and functioning.

He questioned the exact location of the STF headquarters in West Tripura and demanded to know the total number of members deployed under the district’s STF.

The MLA further sought to clarify whether central paramilitary forces such as the Border Security Force (BSF) and Assam Rifles (AR) have been included in the task force, as per the directives issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on May 19, 2025.

Debbarma also enquired if civil administration officials are part of the STF structure and requested a breakdown of the logistical support provided to the task force, including vehicles, mobile phones, and SIM cards allotted for operational use. He raised concern about the establishment of detention camps and their readiness to handle detection, detention, and deportation tasks effectively.

Touching upon the larger legal and constitutional framework, the Tipra Motha legislator asked whether the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is applicable within the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) regions, given that areas under the Sixth Schedule and those governed by the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system are exempt from the Act. He sought a categorical response on whether specific rules and regulations have been formulated for the STF and whether officers have been briefed on the legal distinction between refugees and infiltrators.

Ranjit Debbarma also flagged concerns about the continuity of the STF, noting that just two days after the task force’s formation on July 15, 2025, 54 police officers linked to it were transferred out in a single order. He asked if such a development rendered the STF defunct or operationally compromised.

Lastly, the MLA demanded clarification on whether individuals who entered India after March 25, 1971, are eligible for citizenship under the CAA in Tripura, pointing out the ambiguity over the cut-off date and the lack of mention of the Sixth Schedule exemptions in the state’s official narrative.

Urging the Chief Minister to furnish a detailed written response at the earliest, Debbarma said the clarifications are crucial to dispel growing ambiguity and public confusion around the STF and the implementation of the CAA in Tripura.
