The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has ordered an enquiry into a complaint of wrongful arrest lodged by a resident of Dhalai district and has directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to submit a detailed report by October 16.
In its order, THRC Chairperson Justice Arindam Lodh stated that the commission received a complaint from one Babul Das of Bhowliabasti, Ambassa, against the Officer-in-Charge of Ambassa Police Station and an unidentified Sub-Inspector.
According to the complaint, police arrested Babul Das on the strength of a warrant issued by the Judicial Magistrate 1st Class, North Tripura, in connection with PRC (WP) 54 of 2024 registered at Dharmanagar Police Station. The warrant was issued in the name of one Barun Das, but police allegedly executed it by showing the complainant as “Babul Das alias Barun Das.”
The complainant claimed he repeatedly told the police, including OC Ambassa and SI Hannanir Rahaman, that he was not Barun Das, had no criminal case pending against him, and had never even visited Dharmanagar. Despite this, the warrant was allegedly executed against him without verification, resulting in violation of his fundamental rights.
“Since there is a complaint that the fundamental rights of a citizen have been curtailed by the concerned OC along with one SI of Police, this Commission thinks it appropriate to take cognizance of the matter,” the THRC order stated.
The Commission directed the DGP to conduct a thorough enquiry into the incident and submit the report by October 16.
