North Tripura Police achieved a major breakthrough in their ongoing anti-narcotics drive after seizing a huge quantity of yaba tablets in two separate operations conducted within 24 hours. The combined market value of the seized contraband is estimated to be around Rs 1.5 crore.
In the first incident, police from Bagbasa Police Station under Dharmanagar Sub-division carried out a late-night operation on Sunday near Holy Cross School in the Bagbasa area following a secret tip-off. During the raid, officers detained two youths and recovered approximately 9,800 yaba tablets from their possession. The estimated black-market value of the seized tablets is around Rs 50 lakh.
The arrested persons have been identified as Abdul Kabim Uddin (31), a resident of Uttar Padmabil village under Panisagar Police Station, and Abdul Karim (30) of Sakhaibari village under Dharmanagar Police Station. Police said the two are related as brothers-in-law.
According to police sources, reports of drug trafficking activities had been emerging from the area for quite some time. Acting on intelligence inputs, plainclothes personnel kept the suspects under surveillance before apprehending them. Police stated that all legal procedures were followed during the operation. The accused are currently being interrogated to identify other members linked to the trafficking network.
In another major operation conducted on Saturday night, Panisagar Police intercepted a vehicle near the Tilthai railway gate while it was allegedly transporting yaba tablets from Uttar Padmabil towards Churaibari. During the search operation, police recovered around 20,000 yaba tablets and arrested two persons.
The arrested individuals were identified as Sohel Alam (19) and Babul Uddin (29), both residents of Churaibari.
With Uttar Padmabil village emerging in both cases within a span of 24 hours, police suspect the existence of a larger interstate drug trafficking network operating in the region. Investigation is underway to trace the source and wider links of the narcotics supply chain.
