Tripura Pradesh Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha has accused the Election Commission of removing the names of poor and backward people from the voter list through SIR.
Speaking at a joining programme in Khowai today, Saha alleged that the Election Commission is being used as a tool to exclude legitimate voters, particularly from underprivileged communities.
The joining programme was organized at the Khowai District Congress Bhavan by the Teliamura District Congress Committee. A total of 134 voters from 26 families across three assembly constituencies — Asharambari, Ramchandraghat, and Khowai — joined the Congress Party. Pradesh Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha welcomed the new members by handing them the party flag.
Addressing reporters, Saha said, “Names of genuine voters are being deleted from the voter list through SIR. The Election Commission is using this method especially against poor and backward people because they are not fully aware of their legal rights and documentation. Taking advantage of their lack of awareness about complex legal procedures, the authorities are unfairly removing their names from the rolls.”
He further claimed that this practice is part of a larger attempt to disenfranchise marginalized sections of society.
