In a major push against theft and property-related crimes, police have arrested six alleged habitual offenders in separate operations carried out by West Agartala, NCC and Amtali police stations.

The West Agartala police began an investigation after thieves allegedly broke into the grocery shop of Mridul Modak in the Radhanagar area and fled with several items and a scooty. Acting on the complaint, police formed a special team and launched an investigation.

An alleged habitual thief was first arrested from the Bitterban area. During interrogation, police reportedly obtained information about other members of the group and subsequently arrested two more suspects. Based on their statements, police recovered the stolen articles as well as the scooty bearing registration number TR 01 AB 9400 from the Goala slum area.

In another operation, NCC police arrested Bishwanath Debnath from the Lichubagan area following a tip-off. Police suspect that Debnath has links with several theft cases in Agartala and is allegedly involved in moving stolen motorcycles out of the city through Kunaban.

Police said the arrest was connected to a theft case registered a few days ago, in which five persons had already been arrested. An unregistered motorcycle and a scooty were also recovered from the latest accused. Police suspect that the scooty could have been stolen from the airport area, although the accused reportedly claimed that it belonged to one of his relatives.

Meanwhile, Amtali police have arrested two more alleged thieves in a separate late-night operation. The arrests came during an investigation into a theft reported at the residence of Haridas Sutradhar.

According to police, intelligence inputs and information gathered with the help of local residents helped investigators identify the two suspects. They were subsequently arrested during a special operation.

The two accused are scheduled to be produced before court on Tuesday, with police expected to seek remand for further questioning. Investigators said the suspects' names had surfaced during the interrogation of individuals arrested earlier in connection with theft cases.

Police are also reopening investigations into several old, unsolved theft cases in the Amtali area. Officials said the objective is to identify links between recent incidents and previously reported crimes.

Police maintained that regular patrolling, mobile surveillance and raids against habitual offenders are continuing across the area. However, officials have refrained from disclosing details of some recovered property, citing the ongoing investigation.

Investigators believe that continued interrogation of the arrested suspects could lead to further breakthroughs and the identification of other members of organised theft networks operating in and around Agartala.
