Tension prevailed at Uttar Bharat Chandranagar Higher Secondary School in Belonia on Wednesday after 13 Class VII students reportedly fell ill one after another while attending classes.

The affected students comprised 12 girls and one boy. According to preliminary reports, some students suddenly complained of breathing difficulties and subsequently lost consciousness. Within a short span of time, several others also developed similar symptoms, including difficulty in breathing, cramps in their hands and legs, and a burning sensation in the chest.

The 13 students were later taken to Belonia Hospital for medical attention, where they are currently receiving treatment.

The incident triggered concern among parents, with some alleging that the school authorities failed to arrange immediate medical assistance when the students started falling ill. The allegations have prompted questions over the response of the school administration. The Headmaster and other teachers, however, later reached the hospital after the students were shifted there.

The incident has also raised further concern as a similar episode had reportedly occurred at the same school earlier. Parents and school authorities are now seeking clarity on why students have repeatedly developed such symptoms on the school premises.

Senior officials, including the District Education Officer and the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Belonia, visited the school and the hospital after receiving information about the incident. They assessed the situation and spoke to officials regarding the condition and treatment of the affected students.

The exact cause of the students falling ill simultaneously has not yet been established. The administration is reportedly examining the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine the underlying cause.
