North East Frontier Railway (NFR) General Manager Chetan Kumar Srivastava has announced that an electric MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train service between Agartala and Karimganj will be introduced shortly. He also confirmed that electrification work on the railway network from Sabroom to Guwahati has been completed.
He explained that MEMU trains are modern, energy-efficient, and designed to handle large passenger volumes, offering improved comfort and service. If launched, the Agartala–Karimganj route will become the first in the NFR zone to operate MEMU trains.
Speaking at a press briefing at Agartala Railway Station, Srivastava also reviewed the ongoing redevelopment work under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. He said a new three-storey station building is being constructed, with the first phase costing around ₹48 crore and expected to be completed by March 2027. The upgraded station will include improved passenger facilities, expanded waiting areas, and better amenities, along with an increase in the number of platforms.
He further noted that redevelopment work at Udaipur station in Gomati district and Kumarghat station in Unakoti district is progressing quickly under the same scheme and is likely to be completed by September this year.
During his visit, the GM inspected various ongoing works at Agartala Railway Station and inaugurated newly installed lifts on platforms 1 and 2 for the convenience of elderly and differently-abled passengers. He also reviewed passenger amenities such as waiting room toilets, ticket counters, automatic ticket vending machines, scanning systems, and retiring rooms.
He added that freight services are already operating regularly at Nischintapur station. Work being carried out jointly by Indian Railways, IOCL, and the Tripura Public Works Department at Sekerkot station is nearing completion and is expected to be finished by next August.
Srivastava also mentioned a minor power supply issue on the New Haflong railway line but said overall electrification up to Sabroom–Guwahati has been completed. He added that plans are underway for a future double-line project between Badarpur and Agartala.
He was accompanied during the inspection by Lumding Division DRM Sameer Lohani.
