J&K Resident Sentenced to 12 Years Rigorous Imprisonment in Tripura Ganja Seizure Case

The Court of the Additional Sessions Judge, Dharmanagar, in North Tripura, has convicted a Jammu and Kashmir resident in a major narcotics case and sentenced him to 12 years of Rigorous Imprisonment (RI).

The convicted person, Manjoor Ahamed Chachi, has also been fined Rs 1.5 lakh by the court. In case of failure to pay the fine, he will have to undergo an additional six months of Rigorous Imprisonment.

The judgment was delivered in connection with SPL (NDPS) Case No. 30/2022, arising from Churaibari Police Station Case No. 02/2022, registered under Sections 20(b)(ii)(C) and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

According to case records, the incident took place on the morning of 1 February 2022, when police conducted a special vehicle checking operation at Churaibari Naka Point in North Tripura. During the checking drive, a truck was intercepted and thoroughly searched. Police recovered 260 kg of dry ganja concealed inside the vehicle.

The truck driver, identified as Manjoor Ahamed Chachi, was arrested on the spot and booked under the provisions of the NDPS Act.

Following a detailed investigation, the chargesheet was submitted on 31 July 2022 by then Sub-Inspector Ajit Kanti Chakma of Churaibari Police Station, who is currently serving as Inspector of Amtali Police Station under West District.

After completion of the trial proceedings, the Additional Sessions Judge found the accused guilty of the offences and awarded the sentence in accordance with the law.

The verdict marks another significant conviction in Tripura’s ongoing efforts to curb illegal narcotics trafficking and strengthen enforcement against drug-related crimes.
