Engineers have a crucial role to play in transforming India into a developed and technologically advanced nation by 2047, Higher Education Minister Kishore Barman said on Tuesday.
Barman was speaking at the inaugural programme of a morning procession organised at the Ujjayanta Palace premises to mark the 59th Engineers’ Day.
Paying tribute to Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya, whose birth anniversary is observed as Engineers’ Day, Barman said Visvesvaraya was much more than an accomplished engineer. He was a visionary, thinker and nation-builder whose contributions demonstrated the importance of dedication, integrity, determination and innovation in the development of a country.
The Minister highlighted India’s rich engineering heritage, saying that the achievements of the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation in urban planning, drainage systems, architecture and other fields reflected the advanced technical knowledge of the period.
He said the tradition has continued in modern India, with engineers contributing significantly to the construction of roads, railways and dams, as well as developments in space research and information technology.
“India has made remarkable progress, but we cannot remain satisfied with what has already been achieved. We must continue to move forward to realise the vision of a developed India by 2047,” Barman said.
He stressed that engineers are among the key drivers of nation-building and their knowledge and technical expertise will be essential for achieving the country's development goals.
Calling upon young engineers to embrace innovation and new ideas, the Minister said they should contribute to initiatives such as Digital India, Make in India and Startup India. He also urged engineers to develop solutions that can ensure government services and the benefits of technology reach the most disadvantaged sections of society.
Barman further said that the responsibility of building a stronger and developed India does not rest with engineers alone. People from every section of society must contribute collectively to realise the vision of a prosperous and self-reliant nation, he added.
