The death of a patient at Dharmanagar District Hospital in North Tripura triggered tension on Thursday, as family members accused the hospital of medical negligence and lodged a formal complaint with the police.

According to the deceased's relatives, 55-year-old Jalal Uddin of Botorshi was taken to the hospital after his health suddenly deteriorated. They alleged that the attending doctor advised an ECG, but the first ECG machine failed to function. The family claimed there was a delay in arranging another machine, during which the patient died. They alleged that the delay in providing timely medical attention contributed to his death.

Rejecting the allegations, the attending physician, Dr. Soumeli Nath, maintained that Jalal Uddin had already passed away before reaching the hospital. She said the ECG was recommended only to medically confirm the death in accordance with established procedures.

The doctor also refuted claims that the ECG machine was faulty, stating that it had been used to examine another patient shortly before the incident. She further alleged that some members of the deceased's family attempted to intimidate and harass her following the incident.

Following the patient's death, the family submitted a written complaint against the doctor at Dharmanagar Police Station, seeking an investigation into the matter.

Police officials confirmed that an inquiry has been initiated. They said statements from all concerned parties will be recorded and relevant evidence examined before determining the circumstances surrounding the death and whether any lapse in medical care had occurred.
