The Tripura government has informed the state Assembly that 805.99 km of fencing has so far been completed along the India-Bangladesh international border, while construction remains pending at several locations due to geographical and operational challenges.

The information was provided by the Home Department in a written reply to a question raised by Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma. Tripura shares an international boundary of approximately 856 km with Bangladesh.

According to the department, fencing work is yet to be completed in a number of areas, including Belonia in South Tripura; Longtharai Valley, Kamalpur, Ambassa and Gandacherra in Dhalai; Kanchanpur in North Tripura; Khowai; and Sonamura in Sepahijala district.

The government stated that efforts are being made to address the pending stretches. The issue has reportedly been raised with the Central Government on several occasions, with the state seeking necessary intervention for expediting the remaining work.

Explaining the reasons behind the delay, the Home Department pointed to a combination of factors. Difficult and elevated terrain, rivers and streams crossing the proposed fencing areas, objections from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and delays by executing agencies have affected the pace of construction.

The pending fencing is particularly challenging in hilly and geographically difficult stretches, where construction requires additional planning and coordination.

With most of the border already fenced, the government’s focus remains on completing the remaining stretches at the earliest. The issue continues to be important for border security, surveillance and effective management of Tripura’s international boundary.
