Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr Manik Saha and BJP Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb on Saturday launched a strong attack on opposition parties during the BJP’s ‘Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy’ rally in Agartala, accusing them of questioning constitutional institutions, creating political unrest and obstructing the country’s development.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Saha said that violence, intimidation and the use of force could never be considered the true expression of democracy, stressing that the people’s mandate must be determined through voting.
Referring to the Constitution drafted by Dr B.R. Ambedkar, Saha said India’s constitutional framework guarantees citizens voting rights, protection under the law and the rule of law. He urged BJP workers and citizens to come forward to safeguard democratic values and constitutional institutions.
Criticising the Congress, CPI(M) and INDIA bloc parties, the Chief Minister alleged that opposition leaders frequently question institutions such as the Supreme Court and the Election Commission following electoral defeats. He cautioned that repeated allegations against constitutional bodies could undermine public confidence in the democratic system.
Saha also defended the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, arguing that voter lists must remain accurate, transparent and updated. Citing deaths, migration and alleged illegal infiltration, he said the exercise was necessary to verify voter eligibility. He accused the Congress, CPI(M) and Trinamool Congress of opposing the process for political interests and questioned their motives.
Meanwhile, former Tripura Chief Minister and BJP MP Biplab Kumar Deb targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the opposition’s objections to the National Population Register (NPR) and census-related issues.
Deb alleged that opposition leaders were attempting to create unrest despite the country’s development under Prime Minister Narendra Modi since 2014. Referring to protests at Jantar Mantar, he questioned the rationale behind the opposition’s resistance to the proposed exercises, claiming that the issues had already been discussed in Parliament.
In a strongly worded speech, Deb made personal remarks against Rahul Gandhi and the Gandhi family, questioning the Congress leader’s political credibility and raising his surname in the context of caste-based enumeration.
Projecting the BJP as a defender of national unity, constitutional values and India’s integrity, Deb asserted that party workers would not allow anyone to destabilise the country or create disorder in Tripura. Referring to Maoist activities, he also vowed that such elements would not be allowed to expand their influence in the state.
Both leaders called on BJP workers to reach out to households and continue public mobilisation in support of democracy and the rule of law.
The rally was attended by Ministers Pranajit Singha Roy, Sushanta Chowdhury and Sudhangshu Das, former Minister of State Pratima Bhoumik, BJP state president and MLA Abhishek Debroy, state general secretaries Chandan Debnath and Bipin Debbarma, along with other party leaders and workers.
