Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation and ruling MLA, Dipak Majumder, has urged the state government to set up an Astalaxmi Haat at the Agartala-Akhaura Integrated Check Post (ICP), saying the initiative would promote the North East’s cultural diversity and boost the state’s economy.
Speaking in the Assembly, Majumder noted that the Agartala-Akhaura ICP, located in the city, sees heavy passenger movement from Bangladesh.
“Although passenger numbers have slightly dropped recently, around 2,000 people use this ICP daily. After Punjab, Tripura is the only state where the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Border Guards of Bangladesh (BGB) hold a joint retreat ceremony, which also attracts many tourists,” the Mayor said.
He added that facilities such as a visitor gallery, cafeteria, and other amenities have already been developed to enhance the area.
“Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power, the North East, including Tripura, has received special attention. I urge the government to explore the possibility of establishing an Astalaxmi Haat at the ICP, which will highlight the region’s diversity and beauty while also boosting the state economy,” he said.
