Tripura is gearing up to host a major parliamentary gathering in November, with the state government stepping up efforts to strengthen legislative infrastructure and ensure smooth arrangements for delegates from across the Northeast.

The 23rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region Zone-III Conference is scheduled to be held in Agartala on November 26 and 27. Speakers, Deputy Speakers, Presiding Officers and senior parliamentary representatives from the eight northeastern states, along with representatives of NERIPSTR, are expected to participate in the two-day conference.

As part of the preparations, Tripura Legislative Assembly Speaker Rampada Jamatia met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in New Delhi on August 7 and formally invited him to attend the conference.

During the meeting, Jamatia also submitted a memorandum seeking financial assistance for the construction of a VVIP Vidhayak Atithi Shala, a proposed 50-room guest house for MLAs and visiting dignitaries. The project, estimated to cost around Rs 15 crore, is planned over 25,000 square feet and is being projected as an important addition to the state's legislative infrastructure.

The Speaker also met Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram on the same day and sought Rs 84 lakh to operate buses for students studying at Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS). The proposed transportation support is intended to continue until hostel facilities at the schools are completed, particularly benefiting students from remote tribal areas.

The CPA conference had earlier been postponed from April due to monsoon-related concerns and has now been rescheduled for November.

The event is expected to provide Tripura with an opportunity to showcase its institutional capacity while facilitating discussions among lawmakers on parliamentary practices, democratic institutions and cooperation among the northeastern states.

The preparations also underline the state's broader focus on strengthening infrastructure and improving access to education for students from remote areas.
