In a decisive push to restore normalcy in violence-hit Manipur, security forces have intensified joint operations to dismantle illegal armed structures and recover weapons.
Over the past 48 hours, a significant haul of 50 weapons, ammunition, and war-like stores have been seized from four districts, including Chandel, Imphal West, Kakching, and Thoubal.
The coordinated operations, involving the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, CRPF, BSF, ITBP, and Manipur Police, underscore the security forces’ sustained efforts to counter the proliferation of arms in the strife-torn region. Officials highlighted that the recoveries include 23 improvised mortars (Pompi), AK-series rifles, INSAS rifles, carbines, pistols, and a large cache of ammunition. Additionally, several fortified bunkers, believed to be used by armed groups from both the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities, were destroyed in Kangpokpi district.
The security forces’ focus is not just on seizure but also on preventing further escalation of violence between armed groups. The Defence spokesperson emphasized that such operations are critical in ensuring the safety of civilians and restoring law and order in Manipur, which has been grappling with ethnic and communal tensions for nearly two years.
As recovered arms are handed over to the state police, security agencies continue to enhance surveillance and intelligence-gathering to preempt future conflicts. With persistent efforts, authorities aim to create a secure environment conducive to peace and reconciliation in the region.
