Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Sunday that the new Integrated Terminal of Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati will be operational by the end of this year.
Highlighting the terminal’s significance, the Chief Minister stated that it would effectively accommodate the growing number of air travelers in Assam.
Taking to social media platform X, Sarma wrote, "The Integrated Terminal of LGBI Airport will be ready by this year and cater to the ever-growing demand of Assam’s flyers. At the #AdvantageAssam2 exhibition, I reviewed its scaled model and the facilities set to be introduced at the new terminal."
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the design of the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) during the 'Advantage Assam 2.0' investment summit.
According to an LGBI airport spokesperson, this development represents a major step in transforming the airport into a world-class aviation hub and a gateway to Northeast India. “Inspired by Assam’s natural beauty, the terminal features a unique Bamboo Orchids theme, symbolizing biodiversity, strength, and sustainability. The design seamlessly blends with the landscape, reflecting the region’s rich cultural and natural heritage,” the spokesperson said.
Emphasizing sustainability, the terminal incorporates bamboo and orchid elements, aligning with eco-friendly initiatives. Once completed, the NITB will have a handling capacity of 13.1 million passengers per annum (MPPA), making it the first of its kind in Northeast India.
The spokesperson further revealed that the terminal is scheduled to be operational in the last quarter of 2025.
The new terminal will introduce several advanced facilities and modern amenities, many of which will be seen for the first time in the region. Spanning a vast 140,000 square meters, the terminal's capacity will be six times greater than the existing operational terminal.
The unveiling event saw Prime Minister Modi alongside Assam CM Sarma. The LGBI Airport, managed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), is named after Assam’s first Chief Minister, Gopinath Bordoloi, and plays a crucial role in connecting the northeastern states to major domestic and international destinations.
