Centre unveils new Aadhaar App, No need for photocopies anymore

In a significant leap toward digital empowerment and privacy protection, the central government on Tuesday introduced a brand-new Aadhaar app that eliminates the need for carrying physical copies of the Aadhaar card.

The app allows users to digitally verify and share their Aadhaar information in a secure, consent-based manner.

Launched by Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi, the app promises to make Aadhaar verification not only more convenient but also far more secure.

“In the new Aadhaar app, Face ID-based authentication is enabled via mobile. No need for physical cards or photocopies anymore,” the minister announced in a video message shared on X.

Vaishnaw underscored that the app gives users full control over their personal data. “With a simple tap, people can share only the essential information, securely and with full consent,” he added.

A key feature of the app is its Face ID authentication system, designed to strengthen security and simplify the verification process. Aadhaar details can now be verified by scanning a QR code—much like making a UPI payment.

“This brings Aadhaar verification to the fingertips—just like UPI,” the minister wrote, highlighting the simplicity and user-friendliness of the system.

With this advancement, citizens will no longer need to present printed Aadhaar copies at hotels, retail outlets, airports, or other public verification points. “No more Aadhaar photocopies at check-ins or store counters,” Vaishnaw reiterated.

Currently in its beta stage, the app has been built with stringent privacy protections, ensuring that Aadhaar data remains tamper-proof and can only be shared with explicit user permission.

Calling Aadhaar the very “aadhaar” (foundation) of India’s governance and service delivery mechanisms, the minister also spotlighted the importance of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) with Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). He called upon stakeholders to contribute ideas that combine AI with DPI while maintaining user privacy as a central principle.
