A Border Security Force (BSF) personnel sustained serious injuries in an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) blast near the India-Pakistan border in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The explosion occurred in the early hours between April 8 and 9, during a routine area domination patrol by BSF troops ahead of the border fence.
According to BSF authorities, the patrol team discovered several IEDs with concealed wiring placed well within Indian territory. While securing the area, one of the hidden devices unexpectedly detonated, inflicting a grievous leg injury on a jawan.
Following daybreak, the BSF’s bomb disposal squad was deployed to the site. The team successfully located and neutralised the remaining explosives. The blast site falls under the jurisdiction of the Dorangla police station.
Initial assessments suggest the IEDs were planted with the intent to harm security personnel and possibly endanger civilians, including farmers working near the border.
Despite such dangerous provocations, the BSF continues its relentless vigil across the international border. In 2023 alone, BSF troops of the Punjab Frontier returned 12 Pakistani nationals who had inadvertently crossed over to the Indian side.
Beyond their security mandate, BSF personnel remain active in humanitarian roles—conducting rescue missions during floods in districts like Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, and Ferozepur, and implementing various civic action programmes. These include free health camps, skills training, coaching for security force recruitment, sports events, and cultural programmes.
