In a major success in the fight against drug trafficking, a joint team of Tripura Police, Assam Rifles and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized nearly five lakh yaba tablets valued at around Rs 40 crore in North Tripura’s Panisagar area and arrested a truck driver.
According to Panisagar SDPO Kishlaya Shishodia, the operation was launched following specific intelligence inputs regarding the transportation of a large consignment of narcotics through the state.
Acting on the information, the joint team intercepted a Tata truck at a naka point in Panisagar. The vehicle was reportedly travelling from Assam towards Agartala.
A search of the truck was conducted in the presence of an Executive Magistrate. During the inspection, the officials discovered a specially fabricated concealed compartment inside the vehicle. A substantial quantity of yaba tablets was found hidden inside the chamber.
Officials estimated the seized contraband at approximately 50 kg, comprising around five lakh yaba tablets. The consignment was assessed to have an international market value of nearly Rs 40 crore.
The truck driver was taken into custody immediately following the recovery and was subsequently placed under formal arrest.
A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the law, and further investigation is underway to establish the source of the consignment and identify others allegedly involved in the drug trafficking network.
The arrested accused was produced before the competent court as part of the ongoing legal proceedings.
