The Tripura government on Thursday suspended five jail officials, including the Jailor and four Warders of Dharmanagar Sub-Jail in North District, following the escape of six undertrial prisoners on Wednesday. One of the escapees has since been re-arrested.
According to an order issued by the Inspector General (Prisons), disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against Jailor Dhananjoy Bhattacharya, who has been placed under suspension with immediate effect. During the suspension period, his headquarters will be at Kamalpur Sub-Jail in Dhalai district, and he has been barred from leaving without prior permission of the competent authority.
In a separate order, Warder Parikhan Jamatia, Gedu Mia, Notan Lodh, and Pallab Kanti Bhowmik were also suspended pending disciplinary proceedings. They have been directed to remain at Kailashahar District Jail in Unakoti during the suspension and cannot leave without official approval.
The mass suspension comes after the high-profile jailbreak raised serious questions about prison security in the state.
