Ahead of the annual Rath Yatra celebrations, the Tripura Pradesh Congress has raised questions over the government’s handling of several major incidents in the state and demanded the public release of investigation reports into cases that remain unresolved.
In a statement issued by party spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty, the Congress welcomed the state government’s security measures for the festival but said that serious questions continue to remain unanswered, particularly regarding the Kumarghat Rath tragedy of 2023, in which 10 devotees lost their lives.
The party alleged that changes in the design of the chariot and the route during the Rath Yatra contributed to the tragic incident, where the chariot came in contact with an electric wire, causing the deaths of devotees, including women and children. The Congress claimed that despite the passage of three years, the findings of the investigation have not been fully disclosed to the public.
The opposition party reiterated its demand for strict action against those responsible, proper compensation for the victims’ families, and government employment for one member of each affected family.
The Congress further alleged that several serious incidents reported in Tripura over the last eight years have not seen transparent investigations or the publication of final reports. These include cases of alleged murders, custodial deaths, financial irregularities, and other high-profile incidents.
“The people have the right to know the truth behind these incidents. Delaying investigations and withholding reports only creates doubts about accountability,” the party said.
The Congress also questioned the government’s anti-drug campaign, stating that while authorities frequently highlight large quantities of narcotics being seized, there is a lack of clarity regarding action against those allegedly controlling the drug networks.
The party alleged that influential individuals linked to illegal activities have continued to enjoy political connections and demanded stronger measures against those involved in organised crime.
Targeting the state government further, the Congress said that announcements of inquiries into various incidents have often not been followed by visible action against those responsible. It accused the administration of focusing on blaming previous governments instead of addressing current challenges.
The party also appealed to BJP workers and supporters to reflect on incidents of political violence involving party members and alleged that many workers, including those from tribal communities, have suffered due to political conflicts.
The Tripura Pradesh Congress has called for the publication of all magistrate-level and police investigation reports related to major incidents in the state and urged citizens to support a democratic movement demanding transparency, accountability, and good governance.
“Only a transparent system with public accountability can restore people’s confidence and ensure justice,” the statement said.
