12-Day-Old Baby Girl Found Dead in Well in North Tripura; Police Launch Investigation

A pall of grief and shock has descended on North Gopalpur village in North Tripura district after the body of a 12-day-old baby girl was recovered from a well early on Saturday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Susmita Das. According to police, the body was recovered from a nearby well after the family lodged a complaint with the authorities. A team from the Bazarichhara Police Station, led by Officer-in-Charge Khanindra Nath, rushed to the spot and carried out the recovery operation.

Family members alleged that the infant was taken away from their house during the early hours of the morning. The baby's father, Arun Das, told police that his wife woke up to find an unidentified woman inside the house claiming that the newborn was her own child. The family further alleged that the woman later threw the infant into a well located beside the house before fleeing.

Following the incident, senior officials from the Patharkandi Sub-Divisional Administration and the district police visited the scene. After completing the necessary legal formalities, the body was sent to the district hospital for post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, the infant's mother reportedly linked the incident to supernatural causes. However, police have refrained from commenting on those claims, stating that the investigation is being conducted based on evidence.

Investigators said that all possible angles are being examined and no possibility has been ruled out at this stage. Police added that the exact cause of death and the circumstances surrounding the incident will become clearer after the post-mortem report and further investigation.

The tragic incident has triggered widespread concern among local residents, who have demanded a fair and impartial investigation along with strict action against those found responsible.
