Tension prevailed in Agartala on Thursday as TET-qualified job aspirants staged a protest demanding the immediate recruitment of all 1,856 candidates who cleared the TET-I and TET-II examinations in 2024.
The protesters gathered to press for the publication of the recommended candidates’ list and completion of the recruitment process for government-designated Graduate Teacher (GT) and Under Graduate Teacher (UT) posts.
According to the aspirants, an eligible candidates’ list was prepared after the 2024 TET-I and TET-II examinations, following which they applied for the recruitment process. They claimed that document verification for around 1,856 candidates had already been completed, but the recommended list was yet to be published.
The protesters alleged that they had approached the Joint Recruitment Board of Tripura (JRBT) on several occasions seeking clarity on the recruitment process, but no final decision had been communicated to them.
They demanded that all 1,856 eligible candidates be appointed together, maintaining that there should be no further exclusion or fresh selection process at this stage.
The aspirants also said they had repeatedly sought meetings with Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha and Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy to raise the issue but were unable to meet them.
The situation escalated when police intervened as the demonstration intensified. Police reportedly used a water cannon to disperse the protesters and detained several of them. The detained aspirants were later taken to the AD Nagar Police Lines ground.
The protesters said the prolonged uncertainty over their recruitment had caused financial difficulties and emotional distress among the candidates and their families.
They urged the government to complete the recruitment process without further delay and provide appointments to all eligible candidates.
The aspirants warned that if their demands were not addressed, they would intensify the agitation and consider further programmes, including a mass sit-in and hunger strike.
