At least 50 people, including four children, were injured after a car rammed into a crowd of Liverpool fans celebrating the club’s Premier League title win in the city centre on Monday evening.
The incident occurred on Water Street shortly after 6 p.m., as jubilant celebrations were winding down.
Police confirmed that 27 people have been hospitalised, with one child and one adult reported to be in serious condition.
Dramatic videos circulating on social media show the vehicle speeding through dense crowds, briefly swerving but continuing its course through the throng. Witnesses described scenes of chaos and panic as the car struck multiple people.
“It stopped for a second after hitting some people, then suddenly sped up again and hit more,” said Rashid, an eyewitness.
“People ran toward it and began smashing the windows, but the driver didn’t stop.”
The vehicle eventually came to a halt, where it was surrounded by an angry crowd. Police quickly intervened to secure the scene and protect the driver.
Authorities have identified the suspect as a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area. He was arrested at the scene. Police say he acted alone and have ruled out terrorism as a motive.
“We received reports at just after 6 o’clock this evening that a car had collided with a number of pedestrians on Water Street,” said Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Jenny Sims. “Several people were taken to hospital, and many others were treated at the scene.”
Emergency services responded swiftly, and a full investigation is underway. Police have urged the public to avoid speculation as they continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
