Two men from Bihar were detained in Agartala after police, acting on intelligence inputs, allegedly seized two country-made pistols, three magazines and eight rounds of 7.65 mm ammunition during a special checking operation at Shalbagan on Sunday night.

According to a senior police official, the operation was conducted around 9:50 pm on September 6 near the BSF Headquarters at Shalbagan along the Agartala–Khowai road.

The official said a joint ambush was mounted based on intelligence inputs received from the Assam Rifles Field Intelligence Unit, Agartala, and 35 Assam Rifles. The information indicated that two persons were allegedly carrying illegal firearms and ammunition while travelling on foot from Domdomia towards Agartala.

Acting on the input, security personnel intercepted the two suspects and detained them at the spot. They were identified as Suraj Kumar (29) from Lakhisarai district and Srikant Kumar (36) from Vaishali district, both in Bihar.

A subsequent personal search allegedly led to the recovery of two country/factory-made pistols, three magazines and eight rounds of 7.65 mm ammunition. Police also seized two mobile phones along with their SIM cards.

According to police, the two men failed to produce any valid licence or other legal documents authorising them to possess the firearms and ammunition.

The seized items were formally taken into custody at the spot in the presence of an Executive Magistrate and independent witnesses.

The accused were subsequently produced before a court, where police sought five days' remand for further investigation into the source of the firearms and their alleged intended use.
