A court in South Tripura has convicted three persons in connection with the high-profile theft at Daitteswari Kali Bari and Sabroom Loknath Temple, sentencing them to rigorous and simple imprisonment along with fines.

On July 30, the Court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Sabroom, found Jhulan Nama (28), Chantu Tripura (21) and Sajal Nama (27) guilty in connection with Sabroom Police Station Case No. 46/2024.

According to the judgment, the three convicts were sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs. 10,000 each under Section 331(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). In default of payment of the fine, they will have to undergo an additional four months of rigorous imprisonment.

The court also awarded three years of simple imprisonment and imposed another Rs. 10,000 fine each under Section 305 of the BNS, with an additional four months of rigorous imprisonment in default of payment.

Further, each convict was sentenced to one year of simple imprisonment and fined Rs. 1,000 under Section 112(2) of the BNS, with a further four months of rigorous imprisonment in default of payment.

According to the prosecution, on the intervening night of December 26–27, 2024, the accused allegedly broke open the lock of Daitteswari Kali Bari in Sabroom and stole around 12 bhari of gold ornaments, 20 bhari of silver ornaments and Rs. 25,000 in cash. During the same night, they also allegedly broke into the Sabroom Loknath Temple and stole cash from the donation box.

Following the registration of the case, Sabroom Police launched an investigation, arrested the accused after observing all legal formalities and later filed a chargesheet.

The investigation was conducted by Sub-Inspector Asish De of Sabroom Police Station, who submitted Chargesheet No. 08/2025 on March 26, 2025. After examining the evidence, the trial court found all three accused guilty and sentenced them accordingly.
