Tripura Police detained four persons, including three Bangladeshi women and an alleged Indian tout, at Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala after they were allegedly found without valid documents to establish their legal entry into India.
According to police, personnel from Agartala Airport Police Station reached the airport after receiving information about the suspicious movement of four persons. The team found one man and three women moving around the airport and detained them for questioning.
During interrogation, the three women allegedly told police that they were Bangladeshi nationals. The man was identified as Mazarul Islam, a resident of the Jatrapur area under Sepahijala district.
Police said the three women could not produce valid documents authorising their entry into India. Investigators subsequently learned that Islam was allegedly facilitating their onward journey to Guwahati through Agartala Airport.
The four were taken to the police station for further questioning, following which a specific case was registered.
According to police, the three women are residents of Khulna district of Bangladesh and had allegedly entered India through the Sonamura border in Sepahijala district. Preliminary questioning indicated that they had come to India in search of employment, although police said their exact purpose and circumstances of entry are still being investigated.
Police described Mazarul Islam as a tout and produced him before a court on Friday, seeking five days’ police remand for further interrogation.
The investigation is underway to determine how the alleged entry was facilitated and whether other persons are connected to the suspected network.
