Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Wednesday said the historic Chaturdash Devta Temple has emerged as one of Tripura's most significant religious tourism destinations, reaffirming the state government's commitment to preserving its rich heritage while ensuring sustained development.

Inaugurating the seven-day traditional Kharchi Puja and Fair at the Chaturdash Devta Temple premises in Khayerpur, the Chief Minister described the centuries-old festival as a symbol of Tripura's cultural identity, spiritual heritage and communal harmony.

"Kharchi Puja has evolved into a festival of the people, bringing together individuals from all sections of society, irrespective of caste, tribe or religion," Dr. Saha said.

Offering prayers to the Chaturdash Devta, the Chief Minister wished for peace, prosperity, good health and the overall well-being of the people of Tripura. He said the central objective of Kharchi Puja is the purification of Mother Earth and the pursuit of virtue.

"Kharchi Puja is much more than a religious celebration. It represents Tripura's glorious history, cultural richness, spiritual consciousness and the enduring bond between the state's tribal and non-tribal communities. Although it originated as the worship of the royal family's fourteen deities, today it has become a universal festival embraced by the people of Tripura," he said.

Highlighting the festival's historical significance, Dr. Saha noted that Kharchi Puja is observed every year on Shukla Ashtami during the month of Ashadh, accompanied by elaborate religious rituals, cultural programmes and a grand fair.

Recalling the earlier days when there was no bridge over the Howrah River, he said devotees had to cross the river by boat, often risking their lives, yet their faith remained unwavering.

"People from every corner of the state continued to participate in the festival irrespective of caste, religion or creed. Even today, the week-long celebration attracts visitors from across India and abroad, making it a vibrant platform for cultural exchange and social harmony," he said.

The Chief Minister also spoke about the historical importance of the Chaturdash Devta, revered as the royal family's presiding deities, and said the traditional rituals continue to be performed under the leadership of the Chantai (chief priest) in accordance with centuries-old customs.

The fourteen deities worshipped during the festival are Har, Uma, Hari, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kartik, Ganesha, Brahma, Prithvi, Samudra, Ganga, Agni, Kamdev and Himadri. While Har, Uma and Hari are worshipped throughout the year, the remaining deities are worshipped during Kharchi Puja.

Emphasising Tripura's tradition of unity in diversity, Dr. Saha said the festival continues to strengthen brotherhood among people belonging to different languages, cultures and communities.

"The Kharchi Festival is a celebration of our shared heritage. It promotes cultural exchange, strengthens social bonds and showcases the inclusive spirit of Tripura," he said.

This year's festival, which runs until July 28, has adopted the theme 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam', promoting environmental conservation and tree plantation.

Appreciating the initiative, the Chief Minister thanked the Kharchi Puja Committee for spreading awareness about environmental protection. He also noted that around 22 exhibition stalls have been set up, while cultural performances by renowned artists from different parts of the country will add further vibrancy to the celebrations.

Describing the Chaturdash Devta Temple as one of the state's premier religious tourism destinations, Dr. Saha said the Tourism Department has undertaken several initiatives to improve infrastructure and visitor amenities while preserving the temple's heritage.

"Thousands of tourists and pilgrims visit this sacred site every year. Our government is committed to protecting its historical legacy while promoting tourism-led development. Through such efforts, we are working towards the vision of 'One Tripura, One India' and 'Best Tripura, Best India'. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also laid special emphasis on preserving and promoting India's rich cultural heritage," he added.
