Tripura Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy on Friday said the newly constructed Kailashahar jail is expected to be completed by the end of this year, following an inspection of the project along with the Inspector General (Prisons).

Speaking to reporters after the visit, Roy said the state government is inspecting all newly constructed jails across Tripura to assess the progress of work and ensure their timely completion.

"Not only the Kailashahar jail, we are inspecting all the new jails across the state along with the IG Prisons. We have come here to inspect the progress of the work and see how it can be completed as soon as possible," the minister said.

He said the executing agencies, including the Public Works Department (PWD), have assured the government that the construction of the new Kailashahar jail will be completed by the end of this year. Once completed, inmates from the existing jail will be shifted to the new facility.

Roy also informed that some construction and restoration work remains pending at the old jail premises. The concerned agencies have assured that the remaining work will also be completed.

Responding to a question on the future use of the existing jail after the shift, the minister said no decision has been taken yet.

"These are future plans. We will discuss the matter with local people and take a decision keeping the interests and benefits of the local residents in mind," he said.

The inspection forms part of the state government's broader initiative to review prison infrastructure and ensure modern correctional facilities are made operational at the earliest.
