The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against a senior passport superintendent in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, for allegedly amassing disproportionate assets worth Rs 85 lakh while serving in the department between 2018 and 2024.
According to the FIR filed by the CBI, Deepak Chandra, a resident of Patna, joined the passport department as an assistant passport superintendent in 2015. He was later promoted to the position of senior passport superintendent in 2021 at the Regional Passport Office in Ghaziabad.
Following an assessment of his assets on September 30, 2024, the CBI found that Chandra possessed wealth amounting to 146 per cent more than his known sources of income. The agency alleged that he had illicitly enriched himself during his tenure from July 30, 2018, to September 30, 2024.
“The facts prima facie indicate that Deepak Chandra, while posted and functioning as assistant passport superintendent, passport superintendent, and senior passport superintendent at the Regional Passport Office in Ghaziabad, intentionally accumulated wealth disproportionate to his known income sources, for which he has failed to provide a satisfactory explanation,” the FIR stated.
