A growing demand has emerged for the introduction of undergraduate programmes in Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC) at government degree colleges across Tripura, with educationists stressing the importance of media education in today’s rapidly changing digital landscape.

Dr. Sunil Kalai, Head (i/c) of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Tripura University, has appealed to the Government of Tripura and the Higher Education Department to launch JMC degree courses in state-run colleges. He stated that students of Tripura should have access to quality media education within the state instead of having to move elsewhere for higher studies.

Dr. Kalai highlighted that the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Tripura University has already prepared an undergraduate curriculum aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, making it suitable for implementation in affiliated colleges.

He pointed out that journalism and communication have become highly influential fields worldwide due to the expansion of digital platforms, artificial intelligence, and new media technologies. However, students in Tripura still face limited opportunities to pursue journalism studies at the undergraduate level, often forcing them to seek admission outside the state and increasing the financial burden on families.

Academicians believe that introducing JMC programmes would open new career pathways for young people while also creating opportunities for qualified scholars in the field. Tripura has a number of NET, JRF, and PhD-qualified professionals who can contribute as teachers, researchers, and mentors in newly established departments.

The proposed courses would prepare students for careers in print and digital journalism, television, filmmaking, advertising, public relations, corporate communication, content creation, social media management, government communication, and media entrepreneurship. With India’s expanding digital economy, skilled communication professionals are increasingly required across various sectors.

Experts also emphasised the role of media education in developing critical thinking and digital awareness among students. In a time when misinformation, fake news, and online manipulation are growing concerns, journalism training can help young citizens learn fact-checking, ethical reporting, and responsible communication practices.

The introduction of JMC courses could further contribute to preserving Tripura’s cultural identity. Trained students can document indigenous traditions, local histories, folk culture, festivals, and regional languages through digital storytelling and visual media, creating valuable records for future generations.

Educationists also noted that communication professionals play an important role in improving governance by helping government bodies, institutions, and organisations connect effectively with citizens. Clear, accurate, and transparent communication has become essential for successful development initiatives.

Modern journalism education now includes areas such as multimedia production, digital storytelling, data journalism, artificial intelligence in media, podcasting, mobile journalism, documentary production, and community communication.
