Political activities intensified in Tripura on Sunday as ruling BJP and its alliance partner Tipra Motha Party held crucial discussions over seat sharing for the upcoming Village Committee (VC) elections.

The meeting was held at Sonar Tori Hotel in Agartala from around 7 am, with senior leaders of both parties discussing the distribution of seats and the alliance’s electoral strategy.

Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath chaired the meeting for the BJP. Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Tinku Roy and BJP general secretary Bipin Debbarma were also present.

The Tipra Motha delegation included MLA Ranjit Debbarma, Minister of State Brishaketu Debbarma, MLA Biswajit Kalai, TTAADC Chief Executive Member Runiel Debbarma and former CEM and MDC Purna Chandra Jamatia.

The talks came a day after Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma met Union Home Minister Amit Shah, where discussions reportedly focused on implementing the Tiprasa Accord within a month.

Ranjit Debbarma said seat allocation would be based on the organisational strength of both parties in different areas. He said adjustments could also be made during the nomination withdrawal period if required.

Meanwhile, CPI(M) and Tipra Motha candidates have already submitted nominations, while the BJP is yet to file any nomination papers.

According to the latest data, 1,724 nomination papers have been filed by 1,721 candidates. Of these, 865 are from CPI(M), 839 from Tipra Motha and eight from Congress.

The elections will be held in 587 Village Committees comprising 4,597 seats, after a gap of nearly a decade.
