The highly anticipated Global Indian Pravasi Kabaddi League (GI-PKL) unveiled its prestigious Championship Trophy in a grand ceremony held in New Delhi on Sunday.
The inaugural edition of the GI-PKL is set to commence on April 18 in Gurugram, drawing global attention with the participation of teams from Egypt, Kenya, Argentina, Germany, England, Norway, and Poland.
The Championship Trophy was unveiled by special guests D. Suresh, IAS, Principal Secretary of Industries & Commerce, Government of Haryana, and Deepak Hooda, former Indian kabaddi team captain, alongside Holistic International Pravasi Sports Association (HIPSA) president Kanthi D. Suresh.
Addressing the audience at the event, D. Suresh remarked, “Kabaddi is an integral part of India’s sporting heritage, and the launch of a global platform like GI-PKL in Haryana is a momentous occasion. This initiative will not only provide an international stage for athletes but also strengthen Kabaddi’s recognition as a potential Olympic sport.”
The league will feature both men's and women's teams, but only one team will claim the grand Championship Trophy.
Former India captain Deepak Hooda expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This league will be a game-changer for budding kabaddi athletes. Kabaddi has deep roots in rural India and is played across the nation. I am confident that GI-PKL will elevate the sport to new heights.”
